Experiencing our Annuals Department in springtime is unforgettable. With 25,000 of our exclusive Tagawa-grown geraniums and nearly 200 varieties of petunias stocked in spring, that’s just the beginning! In every direction, from floor to ceiling, high-quality bedding plants are yours for the choosing.
If you are creating your own container gardens, we suggest designing with thrillers, fillers, and spillers.
- Thrillers are centerpiece plants that give height and structure to your container garden. Some favorites are salvia, canna, geraniums, coleus, vermillionaire, and ornamental grasses.
- Fillers are companion plants that surround and complement the thriller plant. Many of our guests love sunpatiens, mounding petunia, begonia, phlox, coleus, shade impatiens, zinnias, and marigolds.
- Spillers are trailing vines that drape over the side of your container and complete the masterpiece. Our go-to spillers are ipomea, calibrachoa, trailing petunia, verbena, vinca, and torenia.

Container Gardens
To save you time, our design team curates over 175 unique container designs. Planted in our greenhouse in early spring, these container gardens grow under the watchful care of our staff. By Mother’s Day, these special planters are fully grown, ready for you to acclimate and enjoy. Whether you are working to brighten a small balcony or a wraparound porch, these premium gardens are hand-grown happiness!
Hanging Baskets
Tagawa Gardens hanging baskets are a tradition. In our production houses, we grow special hanging baskets of begonia, fuchsia, ivy geranium, lantana, and scaevola. In late April to early May, another 10,000 baskets join our spring profusion.
Our Annuals Team also grows about 350 premium moss baskets in 40 different designs, a specialty item exclusive to Tagawa Gardens. These stunning baskets bring the iconic feel of a Colorado mountain town to front porches across the Front Range.
Firefly Petunia
Discover the bioluminescent Firefly Petunia, a first-of-its-kind plant introduction! The Firefly petunia emits a soft glow similar to moonlight. It can be grown in containers and baskets, quickly attaining about 8 to 10 inches in size with abundant white flowers. Although typically regarded as an annual, Firefly petunia can be grown indoors if placed in a sunny spot and given additional LED lighting (400-2000 PPFD).
- Sunlight: Full sun, 6-8 hours, for optimal glowing. In the hot Colorado summer sun, Firefly requires afternoon sun protection or should be moved to a shady location temporarily.
- Care: Firefly petunia is a very heavy feeder that requires consistent, weekly fertilization with a heavy nitrogen fertilizer to be healthy and happy. Deadhead often. Prune to remove spent growth and to shape the plant.
- Water: Prefers evenly moist soil. Water when dry to the touch.
- Glow: A completely dark environment is necessary to view the Firefly glow. Nighttime light interference from streetlights, porch lights, or other light sources will significantly affect or even eliminate the visibility of Firefly Petunia’s natural glow. The human eye is best adapted to viewing the Firefly when it is naturally dark at night. Viewing Firefly in daytime requires spending 15-20 minutes in complete darkness to adjust your eyes before you may begin to detect a glow. Firefly petunias glow where the plant is actively putting its energy, which means that the glow may change from day to day, increasing or diminishing throughout different parts of the plant.

This 24-12-17 fast-acting, water-soluble formula from Proven Winners is suitable for annuals in hanging baskets, containers, window boxes, and in-ground beds. This high-nitrogen fertilizer is also among our fertilizer recommendations for Firefly Petunia, as Firefly is a very heavy feeder that requires consistent, weekly fertilization to be healthy and happy.
