Spring Bulbs (spring planted, summer blooming)

Easter Lily, Tagawa Gardens

Some of the most exotic-looking flowers that thrive in Colorado summers won't survive Colorado winters, so we plant them in spring.  Tagawa's is ready every season with plenty of choices.

Begonias are a perfect example.  They evoke thoughts of the tropics, but are right at home in a shady Front Range summer garden, or in pots on a deck or patio.  Or plant dahlias.  They come in such an eye-popping variety of shapes, sizes and colors, it's hard to know which ones to choose.

These bulbs and tubers are available at Tagawa's approximately mid-March through April.  When cold weather returns in the fall, you can dig and store the plants, or treat them as annuals and replace them next season.

(To store bulbs, wait until the first frost has browned and crisped the foliage. Then either dig up the bulbs and store them in peat moss in paper bags in a cool, dark place for the winter (think crawl space or garage, a place that gets cold but does not freeze). Or simply store the bulbs in the pots and soil in a cool dark place in your garage or area that is unheated but does not freeze. In either case check on them every month or so throughout the winter, and water slightly only if everything is bone dry. Then next spring, around mid to late April you will notice some sprouts coming from thebulbs and then you can put them outside (or replant into pots if not already) during the day on nice days (50 or above), give a good drink of water, and take in at night, until nighttime temperatures are reliably above 55 to 60 degrees (usually after May 15 or later, depending upon elevation)

These spring-planted, summer-blooming flowers are a great way to scratch your early-gardening itch as days grow longer and the weather turns mild.
